i was just reading the posts and suddenly i realised that OMG! i have barely touched any alcohol in ages! i mean i've gotten one mixer at one of the seniors' houses, and a few sips of beer over the past few months. i mean, that could largely be due to the fact that i was sick for way too long.
the age requirement for drinking alcohol in the state of Michigan is freaking 21!!! i don't get it. they have some safe sex store selling all kinds of paraphernalia like vibrators and what not. i live in a substance free freshman dorm(entails no drugs, booze and smoking) and yet every thursday and friday night loads of people pour out and head to frat and sorority parties and the few clubs available in the town. then they return, hurling vulgarities and spitting out the occasional racist joke against "blacks", "chinks" and "native americans". i just avoid them.
what i don't understand is, the freshmen are are a year younger than us, which makes them technically even more illegal to consume alcohol. and my dorm being substance entails kicking you out of the dorm if you return drunk or consume alcohol. and the law states that consuming alcohol infront of minors even if you are of legal age is also an offence. the police doesn't seem to be nabbing the drunks but seems to be especially vigilant during holiday breaks.
another point of contention. the residence hall computing authorities fault you and issue warnings for downloading movies but let you get away with downloading porn flicks.
that said. i am immensely amused sometimes.
i also have friends here who have paid certain fees to obtain fake IDs. one even grew a goatee to get it. i have friends who enjoy clubbing immensely. and there are people who board the north campus bound bus after they finish their clubbing activities and hurl all over the bus. so much so that thursday and friday nights beyond a certain time isn't quite so desirable a time to head home.
can't deny i'm not much of a clubbing fan. i wouldn't mind coming home. sure, we've been deemed too reserved. but oh! sometimes it's a pretty good thing!
when you have drunks dressed in costumes randomly hitting you when you go home, or yelling vulgarities. one thing's for certain you surely know what they truly think coz those racist and vulgar comments only surface when they're drunk and high.
i daren't contemplate what happens elsewhere, coz my town is supposedly very safe. it could be worse.
cheerio hunnys! ask me out clubbing when i get home =P
Hello everyone, and greetings from London!
It is four-thirty in the afternoon, and the sun is setting. Though the weather has been quite mild, it is expected to snow next week. Am excited at the prospect of snow, which I have not seen before, but also skeptical of the accuracy of British weather forecasts.
I see you guys have been having fun! Clubbing, indeed! Me, I've recently been ice-skating. I think it is a very painful sport and not a terribly efficient form of locomotion. My bum still hurts from falling.
Well, more later, because I have to do my lab report!
Gladys
i'm posting to stop this blog from becoming damian's personal blog.
sidetrack: damian, you obviously love blogging, so why dont you just restart your blog? =P
anyway, i surprised myself yesterday because as i tagged, i dont drink and i'm not a fan of loud heavy thumping music and dancing to it (which may be sort of an irony seeing that i play the dizi in the chinese orchestra which involves me -unfortunately- sitting in front of the loud suonas...) in fact, dancing in that kind of manner was something i personally just couldnt get used to so i know i looked like a woodboard fidgeting ard. in fact i was quite dead set on not going, until gilyn msg-ed me and made it sound like a class outing. hahahaha so i figured what the heck, i'd be ard pple i'm comfortable with and its a new experience!
i think i spent more time observing the people around than actually trying to er, get high. (which was difficult to start with because i didnt have alcohol in my system save for a tiny sip) in fact, there were times where i felt zoned out, probably because of the flashing lights and LOUD music and the many many many people just squeezing together and swinging limbs everywhere. its interesting to watch people dance, but you could also see couples er, lost in passionate kissing, dry humping, touching each other in places which are normally considered off-limits...
great, i sound like a voyeur.
but i swear i didn't derive any satisfaction from it. ew.
midway through i suddenly thought, if aliens were observing the entire scenario, they wouldn't know what to make of it.
after a while, yea, it got fairly claustrophobic, the music was starting to get boring (and a bit unnerving esp the one that went f*** you every few beats) and the air distinctly smelt unfresh, so i decided to bail out. unfortunately, i made everyone bail out with me because i had to get my things from the shared locker, (APOLOGIES!!!) but i think everyone else went off to another room... right? yea, while the 2 seriously old fogies of 04s71 went home.
well, at least i lasted beyond my target of 30 mins. =P
hoping to see everyone (or most pple) at cny!!
i'm here to post directly after my previous post.
haha, i'm slowly taking over this blog. maybe it'll end up as my new personal blog. tsk tsk. (don't want this to happen? then post!!!)
okay okay.
erm first things first i've got to answer some of the statements posted on the tag board.
to gladys: erm, i think its okay even if you are on beta, cause i'm on beta but i can still post. yeaaaahhhh. i resent an invite to you... cause you don't seem to be ON the list of members... so try it! and try posting again! if cannot leave me a tag or MSN me and i'll try to solve the problemo.
to ailin, yisheng, suan (and all other people who experience disbelief at me wanting to go clubbing. which is practically the whole world that knows me. =p): hahahaha. times have change huh? but NOOOOooooo i'm proud to say that i did not bian huai or anything. its just a thing about wanting to finally see what the fuss was for myself. =p
just in case if you were wondering whether i went on saturday... the answer is yes. i must thank gilyn for the last minute pulling to get me to make up my mind about going....
and i must of course thank anthon, mao, kw, shinwei, junjia and geraldine for going along as well. (and finally seeing me through the doors of the club, without suddenly turning back and fleeing in fear. muahahaha)
clubbing is such an eye opener!!!!
it wasn't as horrific as i expected it to be, but at the same time, it was just as chaotic as i expected it to be.
i think i came out of it more determined to be a psychiatrist than ever, to understand why humans like us want to purposely get high on booze, loud music and strange alien lights. (though i have lots of theories based on last night already. hehe)
its really a form of self hypnotism... and what a coincidence it is, considering the fact that i'm doing a research project in med school on the whole topic of hypnosis and its effects etc.
i think i must be one of the only few people who go clubbing and end up thinking about work. but oh well, thats where i get my joy from... mixing work and play together. =p
anyway, clubbing can be fun... but for only a limited time only.
it's really quite fun for the first 2 to 3 hours or so. where the alcohol still has its effects... the music and lights have its initial hypnotic effect... the crowd isn't too overly huge and smokey.
but after awhile, it gets to overly repetitive... and the highness seeps away, the people get too rowdy (and smokey), the crowd becomes overly claustrophobic.
then you are left with three options, 1. try and restart the highness but downing more booze 2.call it a day, get out of the club, go to some quieter bar or pub and have a quiet drinking chitchat chilling session (or supper!) and 3. retire to the comfort of home and try to get over your hangover. =p
(i personally am a proponent of option 2. cause my legs get sore after more than 2 hours of dancing, but i still want to drink or stay out somemore.)
still it was quite a fun experience. i would still go again, but like i said, i'm going to be one of those lightning people, who go there for only like 2 to 3 hours, then bail to head to a more quieter spot.
(but of course, if you ask me to choose between going to a bar/pub/cafe against clubbing.... i choose the former. nothing beats Friends style chit chat sessions.)
thats all for today. the next entry will be about CNY gathering. yupppppp.
til then! its back to my usual schedule of tutorials and readings! =>
hello hello!
i'm just wondering if anyone is interested in clubbing this saturday...
erm yes. you saw that right.
i am asking if anyone of you wants to go CLUBBING. can you imagine it? me of all people? asking if anyone wants to go clubbing. the irony of it all.
but anyway... i thought it was high time i got my sorry protected ass through the doors of a club. i mean pubs and bars yes, i've been there done that. but a club? its always been the whole toy with the idea, go to the entrance, then ham away kinda thing.
anyway... nus is organising vbash at st james power station this saturday.
tickets are at 15 dollars each, with a free complementary drink.
and the reason why i'm quite excited about it is because its at st james, which in case you all didn't know, has an age limit for guys set at 25. and guess what? they specially lowered the age limit for guys then to 18.
so yeah. was thinking that its quite a good deal... get into a place that i otherwise, won't have the opportunity to go to in like... another 6 years.
so anyone interested? i need company, don't want to die in there. haha.
and i swear i won't get drunk lah, so erm, no need to take care of me.
just have to make sure i don't clam up at the entrance can already. hahaha.
just drop me a note here or message me... cause i have to get tickets from my friend. hahaha.
oh oh, and you don't have to be an nus student to go for it. haha.
so anyone can go for it! so erm... i hope someone goes (although i highly doubt anyone would want to go. hahahah)
thats all really. about the CNY gathering, will post an entry next week.
(so as to add life to the blog... haha)
Those of us who went. (If the colours look weird, drop a tag coz I was playing ard with them...)
Aaaaaaaaand here's the fireball!! Hmm I remember the phoenix from our year "rose" up though on hindsight i think the phoenix resembled a chicken -oh well- but i think cheering for a "phoenix" beats cheering for a car/tyre.
Yup it was really a blast! woohooooooo~ It was like a madhouse in the hall though. the mass dances were really fun, although we obviously looked like we owned 2 left feet each. cant believe that we actually took part la, seeing how we almost always spontaneously disappear the moment mass dance starts during the previous events e.g maf. but getting old liao la... was soooooo tired after that.
they have an english school song too. damn weird, that.
Actually the thing abt 5 generations under one roof next year... wouldn't that depend on whether anyone from our junior classes turn up?
do let's go back in hc uniform next year! =P though sec sch uniform would be funnier.. haha
damian rocks! haha thanks dude for providing such a superb summary of the events... gosh the atmosphere in the hall must have been quite electrifying!! this batch of j1s must be quite exciting to be able to create so much hype and atmosphere despite the rain!! and thanks to damian's commentary of events, i actually found myself laughing a few times while reading his post... the part about mrs ang blocking the stairs up the stage, about ponning mass dance sessions during our orientation, and about the audacious person who tried to hide the watermelon skin behind damian...hahaha
gosh OUR orientation is just so far away yeah... erps the last time we are going back as a class is next year?? man i'll miss it for sure!! yup but it is quite true that there'll be a gulf, generation gap if we go back... though i'm quite proud of our 71 watermelon and squeeze onto canteen table tradition!!
everybody, pls do meet up often!! time really waits for no one!!
hello people! i'm here to blog again... this time, reporting about campfire 07!
erm... basically, turn out wasn't erm, superb but still good. hahaha.
7 of us turned up (ger, anthon,kw,aman,jj,swim and me) and others did expressed interest in coming, but couldn't make it in the end... but it was still nice to go back and experience it all again! =p
unfortunately, s'pore's recent raining spell decided to come back again... and it just kept raining and raining.
so yes, campfire was held in the hall this year. abit of a sore point to us, because, erm, we all know how superb it was when its held at the central plaza, but to the 07 batch, i guess it didn't really matter.
they were still crazily high and erm, honestly, mad. HAHA. throwing people into the air, forming mad human chains that nearly killed and rolled over people, and apparently, tried to Taw Pok people! So much so that Mdm Ang of council kept screaming and threatening to cancel everything if she saw another human throwing session, and also screamed at fanatical students trying to lead the human chain up the stage.
(in fact, it was the first time i had ever seen a teacher block the stage staircase just to prevent a whole bunch of rabid students from going up. it was quite funny. hahaha)
there was the usual skits and dance items by the different houses. and of course, mass dance and song sessions. all of us sang the songs while we were on the 2nd level, safe from harm's way. (because the juniors were so high, that it was really quite freaky. hahaha)
but during the dance session, we decided to join our great grand juniors, though we wisely chose to dance at the side of the hall. HAHA. our great grand juniors are crazy dancers, all of them really know their mass dances, and we were so embarrassed by our inability to dance them.
came to the conclusion that we really shouldn't have ponned those mass dance sessions during our own orientation. hahaha.
but we did our best trying not to look too stupid. and we survived so yeah. three cheers for that. haha.
there was a lull in the rain however, and the school took the opportunity to initiate the grand light-up... so yes, we did see the fire ball. UNFORTUNATELY, photos aren't with me. haha. so someone else should post it.
fireball design this year was actually quite nice! and cool. though the theme of orientation is admittedly quite sucky: Turbo Charged! Orientation 2007. Think they were trying to go all formular one or something.
but still, it was quite nice. but not as nice as our very own fireball of course, cause nothing beats our own orientation experience. =p
we have finally become great grand seniors already! aren't we old? haha.
anyway, our seniors didn't go, so we were the oldest bunch of 71-ians there le. haha. which was quite shuang, cause we acted like a bunch of empress dowagers/emperors and keep giving very tough orders, especially when they were forced by our grandjuniors to do the usual traditional tasks that we like to perform on new 71-ians. hahahah.
like during the 'whole class stand on table' task, they couldn't really do it, and the grand juniors wanted to give them another table. but we sat on the other table and told them 'cannot like that, we did it on 1 table, so they must also do it on 1 table.' hahaha. i think the 07 batch was quite pissed with us. hahahaha.
and the watermelon task, they couldn't do it as well. and tried hiding the uneaten pieces. they actually had the audacity to hide a huge piece behind my leg. like erp... i may be old but i still have eyes okay! =/
but oh well. juniors are juniors. one day, they will understand our ku xin behind being so strict about our traditions. hahahaha.
actually, we all felt something about campfire, and that is, we are really old now. hahahaha. and it feels so different already. the new batch of hwachongians, though just 4 years younger than us, are so different in style, attitude, etc.
there is basically a generation gap! GASP! can you believe it? between us 19-20 year olds and them 17-18 year olds!
while it was really a trip down memory lane, we decided that next year's the last year where we can go back during orientation. if we decided to go back further, it'll be super weird liao. so yes, i guess next year will be the last year where we will try to organise a orientation class outing again. think about it... next year we might have 5 generations of 71-ians at the same bench! (SCARY)
after seeing them grand juniors and great grand juniors erm, manhandle each other, we decided that we 'old fogies' have to go do something befitting of our age, so we decided to not to go squeeze with the young ones at KAP or something....
but went to drink coffee at coffee bean! and talk about life! ahahaha.
quite sad, but oh well, what can we do right? time waits for no one and we have to start living our age liao. hahahahaha.
but yeah, so we went and probably chatted for like over an hour... after that we decided to call it a day! =>
oh yes, before i forget, erm, jj, swim, kw and i decided that we should have the next class outing on the eve of CNY eve, a sort of 71 reunion dinner thing.
any objections or suggestions? we could go to see the celebrations in the morning in school, then go eat dinner in the night or something like that lah.
so if any of you know of any nice (and hopefully affordable!) steamboat places (other than marina south), to host the dinner, tell me!
because i decided to volunteer myself as the organiser this time, and not trouble kw anymore! haha the poor guy has been the organiser for far too many things liao, lets give him a rest huh?
so yes, i will start sending you or posting the details when CNY approaches, but take note about it!
once again, we are already great grand seniors! can you believe it?
time flies too darn fast huh? =p
til next time, take good care of yourselves folks!
HELLLLOOOOO CHILDREN OF 71!
Do you remember the good old campfire days, when we were in J1, fresh out of secondary school, fresh out of our O levels, ready to face the next phase in life?
Do you remember the craziness of orientation, the madness of being dragged from another class to another (well... at least for both me and kw, haha!), the hilarity of the games, the fun, and the messiness?
Do you remember the beautiful campfire night? Where we all GOT HIGH on campy dance moves, GOT EMOTIONAL when the songs came out, GOT DELIRIOUS WITH JOY when the screaming, stomping and cheering all blasted out?
If your answer is yes, then here's a chance for ALL OF YOU to relive it!!!!
CAUSE THIS FRIDAY IS CAMPFIRE NIGHT!!!!
Its going to be FUN FUN FUN. So make your calendars free for that night, as we ham it all up to relive the wonder of our J1 days all over again!
More details to be given by KW ASAP. Heeeheee. I'm just here to create some enthusiasm about it. =p
So be there, or be square!
Seeya!
Hello everyone :)
A new year is here!! u guys sure had fun at damian's house yah!!
i can't believe we're all going to turn 20 this year!! this topic has come up quite alot among my friends here... and we're beginning to quantify our lives... so you keep hearing comments like "let's say we live to 100 years old, gosh 20% of our lives are over!" haha... abit scary cause i dun feel adult enough... contradicting too cause now that i'm going to be an adult soon, i still want to remain as a teenager!! humans are so fickle...
haha anyway, here's a picture to herald our impending lives as adults
hope that everyone will have a good year ahead!!
aiya yisheng beat me to the first post of 2007! grr...
at any rate, happy 2007 everyone! may your 2007 be a gazillion times better than your 2006.
and as your responsible (and mildly exasperated) class treasurer, i would like to enquire: what on earth do you guys want me to do with the remaining $117.20 in the class fund?!
